Turneja

I recently re-watched all five seasons of Babylon 5. And, as happened 15 years ago when I first encountered the show, I found myself fascinated by Mira Furlan. She is originally from the former Yugoslavia, and she did an astounding job with some very difficult English dialogue, but I found myself with a burning curiosity to see her acting in her own language. Because no matter how long the show went on, no matter how comfortable she became with it, there must always have been that struggle to get her mouth around the syllables, that extra layer of thought required about what she was saying. And I wanted to see her let loose, to see what she could do when completely unfettered.

Turneja is a recent film, made in 2008, but set in 1993 during the war. It’s about a troupe of actors from Belgrade who let themselves be talked into going out on tour through the war zone. They are assured that it’s perfectly safe. Which, of course, very shortly turns out to be completely false. The bulk of the movie is about them trying to get back home, as they stumble from front to front, encountering one army after another. (more…)
